"...time"

This from sketch pad I used in the 70's. No exact date, but I think 1974 or so. It was a mock up idea for a peace poster. From an early job I had at a Quaker Press on 17th Street. They even published my first Angel faerie pacifist comix books. ...below. Printing was my first art skill. I loved it there.

It was a very different time then.

  1. What tech did you use to print? Was this pre-Xerox, or was it more high end than that? I ask because I want a home printing setup - something affordable but high quality, like maybe silkscreen or litho. But I'll settle for a laser copier if that's what it takes.

  2. This is indeed now the "forbidden fruit"!
We are living in dark ages.

  3. They were old school. Offset printing. We only just got one of the first 3M-electronic,...not digital, plate makers. We had office copiers, but didn't do much art on it...well some. I sure did.

They printed my comix B&W offset.
The cover was a four plate color job. They Had "AB-Dick Chief" rigs. Sadly all specimens are lost.

Laser copiers these days are at or near the offset quality of back in the day. The upside the newer sort do near professional color. If we only had those then. Tho' if you can a silkscreen litho set up sounds neat. Get to work.

  4. Today not even my then Quaker friends would have me.
There has been 50 years of hysteria, and it's had it's effect.

Except for my oldest friends. Near everyone I know has internalized the rejection of the art form. It went from just another love to what it is now.

  5. Thanks for that info. As I recall, offset litho is like cutting your own vinyl LPs - you have to print up ten thousand to bring down the price per unit, and then you wind up keeping the results moldering in your garage because you don't have a distribution network. So I think I like silkscreen better. You can start your own basic setup for less than a hundred bucks. Also, I'll do xerox and laser copies where appropriate, like with comix.

  6. Oh yeah - you know those print on demand shops online? They can go get screwed. I control my product from beginning to end.

I'm sick of technoweenies telling us what our future is going to be. I'd rather sell out of an ice cream cart than be beholden to them. As befits a samizdat publisher.
