As for the Party of Lincoln.

Today's Republican party has its roots in the Wallace/Nixon racially divisive "Southern Strategy". All continuity with the party of Lincoln and Eisenhower was severed in the mid-late '60s. It is now a coalition of race nationalists, and culturally regressive movements. There was a complete re-alignment away from it centrist conservative roots.

I'm old enough to remember that too many democrats were as staunch in being against any, and all as in 'all' Civil Rights legislations as many Republicans were. This at the time was a shared sin.
