Like you I've been thinking about time. That, and our lives within it. In Europe, and Asia there are dwellings that are centuries old. Some near a thousand years, and still being lived in by regular folks.
I think the oldest structures in this country done by settlers are no more than 400 years old.
Most less than 200 years.
So I wonder if a common NYC 19th century tenement.
Like the one I snapped on Madison Street will live to be ancient. Still lived in during the 27th century.

That's only 600 years from now. There are pubs as old as that in the UK. One wonders what America will be when it's culture not it's government is 800 years old.

If they're solid stone or concrete they can probably last for many centuries, at least provided the walls are pretty thick. If they're reinforced with iron rebars, those can rust out and leave the structure crumbling. Stick frame houses like the wooden Victorians in SF will be long gone in two or three hundred years.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about sea level rise. Assuming climate change is for real, it could still take a long time for the water to rise very far. If the ice caps melted completely, it would rise about 285 feet, but I imagine that would probably take a couple of thousand years or more. Still, I would prefer my real estate to be well above sea level.

The other,...Climate Change is as real as taxes...you can bet good money on it. I was here for Sandy, and the winters where I am are 6 degrees warmer than when I was a child...now often snowless.

As for funnier items Steel reinforced structures if not insulated are toast. They'll have to be maintained constantly. Pure wood the same. As you say stone preferably thick stone stuff is here for the next Ice Age, and after.

About the rising oceans thing,...Portions of NYC went underwater...20 feet under water. It destroyed the inner working of many of the old classic skyscrapers where I used to work. Not fun that.
The damned East River topped the traffic, and street lights went to the 3rd floor of the tower we were in.
This never happen before. Not even in Native oral histories,...we asked.
So that rising water thing ain't a conspiracy out here.

Yeah, I've noticed weird changes in the weather at this end of the continent too. Mostly it's those out of control wildfires and smoke filling the air over urban areas for weeks on end. Thirty years ago that never used to happen. Of course there were wildfires, but on nothing like this scale. Also, I remember the photos you posted of underwater subway stations in NYC during hurricane Sandy. Shocking images. So yeah, I'm pretty sure the phenomenon's real. I do suspect that some of the "climate emergency" people are exploiting it for their own dubious ends, but that doesn't make it fake.
ReplyDeleteI've read that some scientists are hypothesizing that New York has been hit by a particularly bad strain of the virus. They're calling it "clade G." Looks like being a hermit is still part of a good prevention plan.

Other places hit the same time we were with sometimes less that half the deaths percentage-wise. This led some here to sign on with the bio-weapon cult explanation. ...I was tempted as well.

Also if a bad strain can sprout here various others can show up anywhere. I have to assume they know this. Know it, and not warning anybody.
