Da Queen had been around for the entirety of my life.
Back in the day before satellites. The had to fly the film of the Coronation by RAF jet to New York.

My brother and I were awoken by my ma and aunt.
They broadcast as soon as it came in.
During the middle of the night.
I only remember being carried downstairs.
My brother sez I fell right to sleep.

Part of my family is from the Commonwealth.
At the time it was still the Empire.
I remember relatives standing when the Queen
would give her Christmas greeting on TV every year.

She was just always there.
Through all the hell and wonders of the 20th/21st century.
She was there. She's the same age my mother would
be if she so lived. Mostly my aunts too.

I had wondered if she'd outlive me.
She damned near did da old bat!
G-d save da King.
King Bleeping Charles da Third.
Long may he reign.

  1. We’re going to miss her, I suspect.

  2. I kinda like that old custom of standing when she gave her speech. It’s better to have respect for something or someone than for nothing and no one.

  3. Respect. You don't have to agree but respect. A custom under assault but worthy of keeping. I didn't get why they stood but got it was important. So I stood with them. I also put my hand over my heart during the National Anthem...like my dad showed me to do.

He lived in the teeth of Jim Crow yet fought for this country and loved it as well. Loved the hope of it. Hope. Something else worthy of keeping. King Charles III is inheriting a shit storm...good luck and good will to him.
