In my youth I had this romantic idea that all Queers were idealistic artists and pacifists.
Then I met the real homosexual community. It was at the height of the 70's impersonal random sex era.
Which was the perfect vector for the AIDS Virus.
Far from any romantic notions it was a time of selfish even racist anonymous gabbing jerking and cummings. Though yes, I did find a handful of like-minded brave fools that thought we could overcome cruelty with love. Near all of them are dead now. Their kindly writings unknown. Their bright art vanished. Our artists revolution did not succeed. Still, it was a lovely idea.
Yeah, it was a cruel fuckfest. Though I didn't come onto the scene until the early eighties, I got the vibe. As the marquee on a Polk Street liquor store said one Saturday night, "Either you score or you lay an egg." We know what came from that, and it wasn't an idealistic age of love and liberation.
ReplyDeleteStill, Wim Hof continues to assert that love is the most powerful force in the universe. And I'm not gainsaying him. You and your friends are the ones that really mattered, the rest were just a bunch of mediocre jerks.

We did what we could for as long as we could.
ReplyDeletePerhaps a few of the seeds planted might one day long from now...sprout.
