I'm not taking sides on this war, not now anyway. I can't help but sympathize with civilians who are having their lives destroyed: that could be me. But I doubt there's any way we can know what exactly is happening on the ground there, or the full story of who is doing what to whom. I know of no media source that I trust for that. The truth might come out later on, maybe.
Until now I guess it was a question which way Russia would turn: toward the west as friends and trade partners, or toward the east and the Eurasian Customs Union. Now we know the answer, which will probably affect the rest of this century quite heavily. It's a watershed, one that is not to our advantage.
When a country is landlocked and surrounded by the territories of historical empires, that's not a good outlook. As with Poland, such a country easily and often becomes the doormat of empires. Despite the awful situation of the United States, I do feel lucky that we have an ocean to either side of us.
It usually takes twenty to fifty years for the full story of any post WW2 war to come out. My brother told me how in Vietnam we sometimes lost up to 500 guys in one engagement. He knew he saw it was in more than one of them things.
They did report the dead, but it wouldn't be made public right away and not in one lump. As revealed in the book a 'Bright and Shining Lie'. They'd release the numbers from big loses over weeks to months.
So technically they said who was lost. However, if we back home kept getting news that we'd lost hundreds of guys in just a few days. There'd have been a fucking melt down...the war would have been over 'that' day.
The current European war is a story whose full details won't be known till maybe mid-century. Me I think it's just a make Russia great again fantasy of their boss of life. He wants the CCCP back. Sort of like the Trumpers wanting 1956 back with it's comforting institutions like killing blacks' fags and smoking in enclosed areas.
As I sez in this war one side is a tad less murderous than the other. On the other hand some Ukrainian troops just executed some Russian POWs in revenge for all the civilians they been raping robbing and murdering. Um...I can see it but still a bad idea. Add to that both sides tolerated neo-Nazi armed gangs forever...so Whoever wins I sure as shit lose.
He seems like a pretty thoughtful guy.
