I’ve been chatting with folks on a history page about John Adams. Our second President. Author of The Alien, and Seditions Act. Very complicated man. A man of is times in the worse sense, and of the future in the best. Btw of our first 12 Presidents only John Adams, and his son John Quincy did not own slaves. Exactly the sort of brilliant contradictory guy you’d want around if you’re starting a Democracy. He wrote later that he feared he’d only be remembered for his worse mistake. That “Act”.
He was right.
In many ways a mix of his best, and worse self speaks to these times. Plague national suspicions, and xenophobia. As for me in these fearful traumatic times. I’m doing my laundry,…‘all’ of it. I find doing more than the usual tidying, and assorted house frau stuff helps the soul.
Renewal in the face of darkness. Being clean, and well dressed in the face of the enemy. As Wellington allegedly said at the start of the grand battle of Waterloo, “…I like my men, and officers well turned out when facing the foe.” However calling some of my fellow citizens enemy brings me such sorrow. However it’s come to that.
This is where we are. ...for now. All things pass.
