BTW, if you look at old photos of L.A. from a hundred years ago, you can spot lots of rooftop solar water heaters. These are a proven technology that works quite well, in fact I gather they're used in Nepal to this day. They save a lot of energy and it would be very intelligent to once again deploy them; so of course we don't do it.
In time we will again. The roof water heaters. These make too much sense to suppress indefinitely. Though they've certainly tired.
As for NYC coal gas fires, and explosions. No concern for life was involved by putting in venting. Landlords just wanted their properties around to gouge the poor of every penny.

So without a pipe to vent the gases, the coal cellar might blow up? That's certainly a design consideration I wouldn't want to neglect.
