I took the subway to the post office yesterday,...it's now too long for me to walk. I was astounded. I expected no one to be down there,...and there wasn't. However it was cleaner that I have seen it in my life...as in my whole life.
They shut it down now after midnight. Like the Paris Metro.
However ours has 'Never' been shut down...other than during 9/11.

That's I think the only time in 120 years.

They shut every night now to sterilize the system. In the first months it became a toxic pandemic stew.
Near 200 transit workers perished. Now it's reborn. The stations, and carriages are spotless the marble walls polished! Mind you I only went two stops, but as I say it was a stunning experience.
Btw the electric model above. That's the #4 train the very one I use.

  1. Astonishing. But then, nearly *200* transit workers..? It's about time they cleaned up their act.

I remember the NYC subway from the 80s. It was LOUD. I also remember when they built the system in the SFO area back in the early 70s. What a gleaming futuristic marvel it was to be, traveling as fast as - gasp - 90 miles per hour! Now it's a rattling wreck that barely tops 45, with smelly seats and running on computers that make the game Pong look hyper futuristic. And above all, it's LOUD. The howling scream is a torment to my tinnitus-afflicted ears. I think this happened in the last 20 years or so. I avoid it now.

  2. It is or was a 24 hour a day operation for 120 years,...so tidy cuteness was not an option. I was just stunned to see it actually clean for the first time in my fucking life.

    Quiet too.

Fewer trains no one on the platforms. Clean quiet, and safe.
Three words I would never in my life have thought would describe the NYC Subways System.

As for the Systems out by you.
No offense, but I was never impressed.
It look more like a table top toy system to me. Not surprised it went to hell so fast. What 30 or so years, and already shot...yeah I thought as much.

I'm just sorry it harmed your ears,...fuck them jerks!

    Bring back the trollies.
