I learned something new today. This is always fun for an old guy. This is a bit late in the season, but bear with me. Seems Santa Claus, and the Brit Father Christmas ain't the same guy,...exactly.
Hey I didn't know okay! Gimme a break.
Our guy ol' Santa Claus or "Sanna" as kids call him came over with Dutch, and German immigrants in the 18th, and 19th centuries. Before that having any sort of Christmas was at best a spotty sort of thing. Especially with assorted fanatical religious sects in the colonies making it illegal.
Their great fear was that it might make people happy.
This tradition lives on for other things in the demented Evangelical madhouses.
Anyway the whole thing was refined once the art of advertizing was started. Coca Cola establish the current visual. Also insanely commercialized template for Santa.
He used to be in furs.
Slowly the red came in, and corporate hedgemony did the rest.
Father Christmas starting showing up during Brit winter festivals. This as a Saxon era pagan figure known as "King Frost". He was a Solstice bringer of Spring sort of guy. Yeah this guy definitely wore furs.
Sometimes had a sword too. The Norman invasion's brought Saint Nicholas. At this point it all went to town as everything mixed together giving us Father Christmas, and or Father Noel.
So the Brits got their guy by pagan rituals, and vast invasion. We got ours through immigration, and advertizing. There in is the different between Europe, and America.
Next question,...?
