The following is my response to post I found online to stop all space travel, and fix the earth.
Space travel, and having a human presence on the moons, and some planets, and asteroids is a very long term centuries long process. We've only just started. In 60 years we've accomplished a preliminary robotic survey of the entire Solar System,...think of that. If that's all we ever do out there that would be a miracle.
Balance.
Balance on this world, and the worlds we will move to. This will happen. We will heal the world our peoples, and the creatures of the world. We will learn from the grave mistakes of taking, and not giving. We will learn stewardship of the worlds of our system.
Again this is centuries of work. Even thousands of years of work.
We need to think very long term as some indigenous culture once did...a few still do. So no we won't stop. However will temper what we do. We will not exploit more of this world just to go out, and do the same everywhere else.
We will care for plant, and nurture as we go.
We don't have centuries left! We're lucky if we have a couple of decades. Any thoughtful person has seen this coming for quite some time now. The kind of cooperation necessary on a worldwide basis to save our asses is not going to happen and it would have to begin immediately.
ReplyDeleteFace it, we're through as a species, and maybe that's the good news!
This is as likely as the other time line where we actually get our shit together, and have a future. Being what we are it's likely to be a mix of the two. Most of the world dead with a portion saved for a much smaller population of flora, and fauna.
ReplyDeleteIn that context we still go to the stars.
It just takes longer, but in that history we'll have the time.
We stay as we are,... You're on the money. Extinction of us, and many we'll drag with us in a century,...likely less.
Then evolution kicks in to replace us, and all to took with us.
30 to 40 millions of years for the biosphere to get over us. Then Earth is back in business.
A moment in galactic time.
Btw when space alien exo-geologists go poking around Earth's strata in say half a billion years. That radioactive isotope rich thin black line?
ReplyDeleteThat'll be us.
Gort will call over to his pal, "...Hey Kang I found another bunch of suicidal nutters here."
