"Oblivious"

As ya know I pass my days staring blankly sleeping or watching doucs, and lectures on YouTube. Lately my fav topic is immediate post WW2 politics, and culture. Lots of footage of Axis troops surrendering the first occupations.  The culture shock of defeat on the common people. That, and the utter estrangement from reality by the Axis leadership.

In the first days after the surrender. Some German authorities in areas not occupied by the Russians thought it was going to be much as after WW1. Some elements of their government would continue. Their armed forces though perhaps required to reduce in size would remain.

That, and it's leadership would be free at large some still in office. This as after the WW1 Armistice some 25 or so years before.

Goring above at a news conference with the Allied press. He was treated with respect by them, and the Allied officers present. The former Luftwaffe chief actually thought he might be asked to lecture at West Point. All this before the gravity of the Nazi era was realized.

(...below video of Goring with Major J.R. Andersen strolling about. He was not yet identified as a war Criminal.)

The then German leadership was oblivious to the profound evil they had done. Much as the current One Percent.
