ReplyDeleteThis is a very important building, historically and architecturally. I don't think its destruction is a happy event. Also, I do not dismiss the possibility that the enthusiasts of one Abrahamic religion might have compassed the destruction of a temple of another Abrahamic religion. In fact I suspect it. Should that prove to be the case - well, they would burn down all the remains of all the pagan temples in the world with most avid enthusiasm. Cultural destruction - I just don't like it.

Freud, who used the word "culture" interchangeably with "civilzation" had this to say:

Get our priorities straight. Frequently Mr.Sidney doesn't know where his next meal is coming from and yet already people have offered almost a billion U.S. dollars to rebuild this church.

ReplyDeleteMy fridge is often empty, and cabinets bare. I take this as just life at the end of empire. Though sometimes I manage. Sometimes I still have a bit of dignity.
