"The accursed places, in which Christianity has hatched its basilisk eggs, should be razed to the ground and be, as vile places of the earth, the terror of all posterity. One should breed poisonous snakes there." -Nietzsche, The Antichrist, postscript, 30 September 1888
This is a very important building, historically and architecturally. I don't think its destruction is a happy event. Also, I do not dismiss the possibility that the enthusiasts of one Abrahamic religion might have compassed the destruction of a temple of another Abrahamic religion. In fact I suspect it. Should that prove to be the case - well, they would burn down all the remains of all the pagan temples in the world with most avid enthusiasm. Cultural destruction - I just don't like it.
Freud, who used the word "culture" interchangeably with "civilzation" had this to say:
"We come upon a contention which is so astonishing that we must dwell upon it. This contention holds that what we call our civilization is largely responsible for our misery, and that we should be much happier if we gave it up and returned to primitive conditions. I call this contention astonishing because, in whatever way we may define the concept of civilization, it is a certain fact that all the things with which we seek to protect ourselves against the threats that emanate from the sources of suffering, are part of that very civilization." -Sigmund Freud "Civilization and Its Discontents"
Get our priorities straight. Frequently Mr.Sidney doesn't know where his next meal is coming from and yet already people have offered almost a billion U.S. dollars to rebuild this church. All things perish. Humanity itself will soon be extinct. Galaxies collide and black holes devour without discrimination.
Aaron I thank you for your thoughtful, and kind concern. By good fortune I ate today.
My fridge is often empty, and cabinets bare. I take this as just life at the end of empire. Though sometimes I manage. Sometimes I still have a bit of dignity.
As for this event no matter it's author. Happenstance or active villains. I again quote Mr. Spock.
